THE EPICYCLIC CLOCK
This is one of the most interesting of all single train skeleton clocks ever conceived. First designed by an Englishman, William Strutt, in the late 1820’s, it has a number of interesting and extremely unusual features not found in other clocks. Epicyclic gearing, also known as planetary gearing, is a gear system consisting of one or more outer gears, or planet gears, revolving about a central, or sun gear. The centre arbor, which carries the minute hand, is driven by a cable-wound fusée assembly which regulates the force of the mainspring so that the power is constant from the beginning of the wind to the end.
Both beautiful and unusual in the extreme, this clock is an excellent and reliable time-keeper.
